Why Choose This Pattern?

Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads | Authentic 1910s Digital Pattern | Past Patterns 6909

Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads bring you a faithful digital reproduction of Butterick pattern No. 6909, first featured in the May 1914 issue of The Delineator. This clearing-length skirt with a slightly raised waistline can be made with two or three circular ruffles or as a plain narrow skirt that skims the figure in true mid-1910s style.

About These Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads

In the original description, “the two-piece skirt has soft plaits at the top of the back” and may be finished either with circular ruffles or in a plain version. The silhouette is slim through the hips with fullness released below, creating a graceful walking skirt that works beautifully for everyday Edwardian wear, historical reenactment, or stage costuming. The digital pattern preserves the original shapes and seam lines so you can recreate that authentic 1914 look.

Pattern Details

The digital file set is based on a carefully redrawn version of the original Butterick pattern sheet, formatted for today’s printers while retaining the historic draft. Pattern pieces include the front gore, back gore, three graded ruffles, and an inside belt, just as in the original early 20th-century pattern.:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

  • Original publisher: The Butterick Pattern Company
  • Era: Edwardian age, circa 1914
  • Style: Clearing-length skirt with slightly raised waistline
  • Options: Two or three circular ruffles, or a plain skirt version

Sizing & Fit Information

This digital pattern reproduces a single historical size from the original Butterick specification:

  • Waist: 22" (56 cm)
  • Hip (7" below waist): 37" (94 cm)

This is the only size included in this digital pattern. Experienced sewists and pattern cutters can grade or adjust the pattern to other measurements, as the skirt seams and ruffle placement provide clear reference points for altering waist and hip fit while preserving the original lines.

Digital Formats & What You Receive

Your purchase of Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads includes multiple digital formats so you can print the pattern in the way that best fits your workspace and equipment:

  • 36" wide format: Full pattern layout configured for large-format copy-shop or plotter printing
  • 8.5"x11" (tiled): 35 pages to print at home on standard U.S. letter-size paper, then trim and assemble
  • A4 (tiled): 35 pages to print on international A4 paper, with the same layout adapted to metric sizing
  • Instruction booklet: 4-page booklet provided in both 8.5"x11" and A4 formats with cutting layout, notes on tailor’s tacks, and waist-line finish information drawn from period tailoring practices:contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

All pages are provided as PDFs so you can reprint pattern pieces and instructions whenever needed.

Recommended Fabrics & Trims

Period sources recommend cotton crepe, linen, serge, taffeta, and other firm dress fabrics for this style. When made of woolen or heavier cotton, the skirt should be finished with a braid at the hem—a typical Edwardian detail that adds both weight and decoration. Plain versions in darker colors such as blue, grey, tan, or black create a practical walking skirt, while lighter tones or contrasting ruffles lend themselves to more fashionable daytime wear.

Historical Context

The design behind this digital skirt pattern comes from The Delineator, the fashion magazine published by the Butterick Pattern Company and widely known as an authority on women’s dress in the early 20th century. For more on the magazine’s role in documenting and shaping fashion of the period, see this overview of The Delineator and related early 1900s fashion publications.

The soft back plaits, slightly raised waistline, and clearing-length hem are all characteristic of skirts worn in the years just before the First World War. That makes this pattern an excellent choice for living history presentations, museum education programs, vintage-themed events, and theatrical productions set in the 1910s.

Sewing Skill Level & Difficulty

Difficulty: 3/5 (Intermediate)

Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads are best suited to an intermediate sewist. The skirt itself is not complex in terms of number of pieces, but several factors raise the difficulty above a true beginner level:

  • Fitted waist with darts and an inside belt that must sit smoothly around the body
  • Soft plaits at the back that require accurate marking and careful pressing to achieve a clean, period-correct fall
  • Optional circular ruffles that call for patient gathering and even stitching along the joining seam
  • Concise, vintage-style instructions that assume familiarity with techniques like tailor’s tacks, hemming, and waistband finishing

The difficulty rating is based on the need for precise fitting at the waist and hips, controlled handling of ruffles and gathers, and confidence reading historical-style directions rather than modern photographed tutorials.

Using Your Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads Today

With Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Downloads, you can quickly print and assemble the pattern at home, then choose fabrics that match your project goals—sturdy wool or cotton for practical day wear, or a crisp taffeta or lightweight worsted for a dressier impression. The skirt pairs beautifully with reproduction shirtwaists, tailored jackets, or simple knit tops for a more casual vintage-inspired look.

Printed Pattern Option

If you prefer a ready-printed pattern instead of assembling tiles, Past Patterns also offers a full-size printed version of this design on 36" wide paper. You can find it here: Edwardian Two-Piece Skirt Sewing Pattern. Both the printed pattern and the digital version use the same underlying historical draft, so you can choose the format that best matches your sewing space and tools.

FAQ's

(Frequently asked questions)

Why are both Trowsers and Trousers listed on site?

Over the last 200 years, much like the human body, our style of language has changed.  For vintage patterns, we attempt to use the language of the day where possible.

Can you grade (edit) a Vintage Revival pattern for my size?

please contact us with the specific pattern number and the specifications you require.  We have staff available for this for an additional fee.

What sizes do Past Patterns patterns come in?

Our patterns, with some exceptions, are manufactured in sizes 8 through 26 for women and sizes 34 through 54 for men. Most patterns are multi-sized. For a complete listing of measurements in inches see the size chart.

Do you have vintage patterns (manufactured prior to 1950) that you want to sell?

we are always on the lookout for original, American designed, vintage patterns especially for categories outside of current items.  We are interested if you have 1 pattern or 1000 patterns.  Give us a call to discuss.

Why is my pattern size different from my off the rack dress size?

We use the U. S. Board of Standard Measurements to size our patterns. The ready made clothing manufacturers have their own set of sizes developed from their own statistics. For a complete listing of measurements in inches see the size chart.

How are the patterns packaged?

We package our patterns in two forms: Bond Paper and Tissue. Except for the Tissue patterns, each is slipped into a reusable plastic sleeve. Many contain documentation in the form of Historical Notes or the printer ie., Butterick. Because the patterns are printed in house to order, they can take from three to seven days. Tissue patterns, which are printed out of house, are available to ship immediately.

What does a Corset Kit contain in addition to the Corset pattern?

In addition to the pattern, the kits contain everything you need to make the corset except the thread. The kits contain, according to their type, fabric and lining, stays, clasp or busk board, back lacing, tape for finishing the edges, trim lace, ribbon, leather, tin stock, waist tape, punch and setter, eyelets, marking pencils, cording, reed and a loop turner.

Need a pattern in your language?

we can translate our instructions into just about any language

Have an old and incomplete Past Patterns item. What can I do?

The answer depends on if the pattern is still in production or not.  If it is, please mail us the old pattern and we will ship you a copy of the latest pattern for a minimal fee along with normal shipping charges.  If the item is no longer in production, we would need to know exactly what you have to determine the best course of action to help you.

What is the difference between a Past Patterns original pattern and a Vintage Revival pattern?

The Past Patterns originals were designed in house and based upon the research, disassembly and time of Saundra Ros Altman.  These designs come from finds all over the United States reaching from San Diego, California to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.  She created the initial patterns, the sizing charts and the instruction content.  Many of the these patterns are multi-sized or are available in various sizes.  For the most part, these designs are done taking into account the modern human body's shape, height and weight. The Vintage Revival patterns are traces or copies of an old, mass produced pattern; the first mass produced patterns came out in the 1850s.  For the most part, you get exactly what came in the original package; in some cases, Saundra has appended historical notes to the instructions.  The Vintage Revivals patterns, being copies of the originals, generally only come in one size and are based upon the size and shape of the human body from the era the pattern came from.

What software do you use to create patterns?

We utilize PW Studio for our designs.  Isabelle Lott, a contributor over the years to Past Patterns, is the owner of the company and will be happy to answer an software related questions you have.  Her software is available for licensing.

What measurements do I need to know to order a Corset Kit?

The bust and back length. The back length is measured from the prominent bone at the base of the neck to the natural waistline.

Where can I see the appropriate clothing fabrics for the 18th and 19th centuries?

You can see 1740 through 1940 fabrics in a book titled "Textile Designs" by Susan Meller and Joost Elffers. The subtitle states, "Two Hundred Years of European and American Patterns for Printed Fabric by Motif, Style, Color, Layout and Period and 1,823 Illustration in Color." What they don't say is that 90% of the swatches pictured are life size. The ISBN is 0-8109-3853-7. A second book is Wearable Prints, 1740-1860, History, Materials, and Mechanics by Susan W. Greene. The ISBN is 978-1-60635-124-6. Great books! Order it from your local library that has interlibrary loan capability if you cannot afford the price. There are now many sources for appropriate fabric through the Internet.

Where can I find antique patterns to purchase?

On the Internet try: "Patterns from the Past."
